Application for Registration Instructions

Fees for Registering Your Foal/Horse

For the most current fee schedule please ensure that you use a current application for registration form.

ASHA membership is required to conduct business with the Registry - basic senior (adult) membership is $70 for one year. For other rates please refer to the membership fee schedule which can be found on the membership application. Make all ASHA membership payments to ASHA - All other fees are payable to ASR.

  • Basic registration fees are determined by the age of the foal/horse being registered at the date the Registry receives the application and fees. If fees are not included with the application the amount will be determined by the age of the foal/horse on the date the fees are received. Unregistered foal transfers which are not filed in the same year the foal is born will incur a $50 fee.
    • Birth to 6 months: $45
    • 6 months to 12 months: $65
    • 12 months to 24 months: $200
    • Over 24 months: $300
  • DNA kits are $50. DNA testing is required for every foal/horse to be registered. (Foals/horses which are tested by a foreign lab require a $25.)

Ø  If a sire or dam has never been blood-typed or DNA tested or was blood typed prior to 1992 there is a one-time $75 fee in order to have this done.

Ø  If a sire or dam has been blood-typed after 1992 they will require conversion to DNA. This is a one-time $30 fee for the lab to convert the blood sample on file.

If you are unsure if your sire or dam has had either of these tests done you may check on-line or inquire with Registry staff.

  • Optional fees include the Breeder's Designation ($25) and the Return by Certified Mail ($10 - U.S. only) fees. A Breeder's Designation is an option for the breeder to assign an individual(s)/farm/business other than themselves to be listed as the breeder. Please refer to the Breeder's Designation form for more information.

Application for Registration Instructions

This is only a guide - please refer to the Registry Rules and Regulations for any issue not covered.

1 & 2. SIRE and DAM: Supply complete and accurate information.

3. NAMING:

Names must be acceptable and not conflict with any other horse previously registered with ASR, either living or dead. A conflicting name is one which is too similar to an existing name either in spelling or pronunciation. Names may not exceed 35 characters to include spaces and punctuation. The Registry reserves the right to correct obvious misspellings as well as the right to reject any names whether for reasons of conflict or good taste. Initials, as well as 'A' or 'An' may not be added to a name already in use in order to avoid confusion.

As of Jan 2011 – a name of a horse which has been deceased for 25 years or more, has no progeny & no show record may be submitted for approval to the Registry. The Registry retains all rights to deny a previously used name or similar name.  For the full text on naming please refer to the Registry Rules and Regulations.

4. SEX: Please check appropriate box, if a gelding please enter the date altered if known.

5. COLOR: One or two words may be used to describe coat color such as dark bay or liver chestnut. Patterns such as Tobiano, Overo, or Sabino can be recorded for pintos as well. Pintos require four color photographs (front, back, and both sides). DNA color testing is available for an additional fee of $40, but is not required.

6. DATE FOALED: Enter the exact month, day, and year of foaling. Please ensure this date is accurate as it will be compared to breeding dates listed on the sire's service report.

7. ASSISTED REPRODUCTION: This section is only for foals produced by any form of transplant such as embryo or oocyte transplants. If your foal was a result of either embryo or oocyte transplant you will also need to complete the Embryo Transplant Certification on page 4 of the application.

8. LOCATION OF THE MARE AT TIME OF FOALING: Please enter the state abbreviation.

9. DNA TESTING: DNA kits will be ordered upon receipt of the application for registration by ASR staff as long as sufficient fees are included. Please enter the address to which the kit should be sent. KITS ARE NOT RETURNED TO OUR OFFICE - please follow the instructions which accompany the kit.

10. ASHA MEMBERSHIP - At least one individual, whether buyer or seller, or owner, of the foal/horse to be registered must be a member of ASHA.

11. FUTURITY FOAL: If you are registering a weanling in order to show in a futurity of the same year please mark 'yes'. Checking 'yes' will not guarantee a completed registration prior to the futurity date. Only weanlings are eligible for conditional registration, or registration which is awaiting DNA confirmation of parentage. We strongly recommend that applications be submitted at least 3 weeks prior to the date of the futurity or any deadline.

12. OWNER OF FOAL: This section should only be filled out if the foal is to be registered in the exact ownership that the dam is recorded in (at time of foaling). If you are unsure of who the recorded owner of the dam is please either check on our website or contact our office. The official certificate will be mailed to address listed here unless section 13 is completed.

- OR -

13. UNREGISTERED FOAL TRANSFER: This section is to be used in order to change the ownership of a foal from that of its dam; whether the foal is sold, transferred to a different owner, farm or business, or an individual is being added to or removed from the ownership. A DATE OF EFFECTIVE OWNERSHIP OR DATE OF SALE MUST BE INCLUDED. Transfer fees will not apply if received in the calendar year that the foal is born. Otherwise, a fee of $50 will be assessed. The official certificate will be mailed to address listed here.

MARKINGS:

Please draw in markings as accurately as possible and write descriptions in the appropriate places. If there are no markings be sure to indicate this by marking or writing "none". Four current color photos which clearly show all markings are required for any horse with white markings behind the ears or above the knees and hocks (such as pintos). Photos are strongly recommended for all horses for identification purposes.

BREEDER'S CERTIFICATE:

The stallion owner at the time of breeding must provide the name of the sire and dam as well as the breeding dates and their signature. The breeder’s certificate was made optional for the stallion owner after 2007. Therefore, any foals/horses born after 2008 may or may not need a breeder’s certificate. A breeder's certificate is not required if the same individual/entity is the owner of record of both the sire and dam at the time of breeding.

EMBRYO TRANSPLANT CERTIFICATE:

As of July 2010 all applications of embryo transplant foals must include the contact information of the veterinarian/facility which performed the procedure as well as the date of the transplant. This section is for providing this information. By signing this certificate you are stating that all information provided is accurate to the best of your knowledge.

Breeder's Designation (not included - separate form):

The owner of the dam at the time of breeding is considered the breeder unless a breeder's designation is filed. This is an option for the breeder to assign an individual(s)/farm/business other than themselves to be listed as the breeder of an individual horse. There is a $25 fee to file a breeder's designation. Please refer to the Breeder's Designation form for more information. The breeder's designation form is not included as part of the application form.
