YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS

ASHBA Youth Scholarship

Since 1991, the American Saddlebred Horse and Breeders Association has awarded approximately $400,000 in scholarships to youth involved with American Saddlebreds. The purpose of the American Saddlebred Horse and Breeders Association Scholarship program is to provide scholarships to members of the ASHBA, 21 years of age and under, at grade 11 or higher, who demonstrate financial need, participation in ASHBA Youth Programs, a commitment to the American Saddlebred industry, and academic success. Scholarships will be awarded only to applicants on the basis of submitted evidence of academic success, financial need, extracurricular activities (including community service), involvement with American Saddlebred horses, and personal references. An interview may also be required.

Each year, the application period is open from April 15 to July 31. The completed application, essay, attached transcripts and tax information are due in the ASHBA office no later than July 31 of the year you wish to receive the scholarship. Letters of reference are due with the completed application and materials.

Melissa Moore Passion for the Breed Scholarships

The Melissa Moore Passion for the Breed Scholarship is used to provide financial assistance for ASHBA and KASPHA members, who are students seeking undergraduate or graduate level education, and have a sincere passion for all aspects of the American Saddlebred breed. The purpose behind this award is to encourage the youth of this industry to seek higher education or training in the hopes that they will use the skills and education achieved with the assistance of this award to benefit the future of the equine industry. Two scholarships will be awarded on an annual basis, one to an ASHBA member and one to a KASPHA member.

To be eligible, applicants must submit evidence of academic success, financial need, extracurricular activities (including community service), involvement with American Saddlebred horses, and personal references. An interview may also be required. Further requirements apply for KASPHA members.

Completed applications, attached transcripts and financial information are due in the ASHBA office no later than December 1st. Letters of reference are due by December 15th.

USEF National Youth Sportsman's Award

This award is open to applicants aged 17 or younger as of December 1. The award is open to individuals across all breeds and disciplines who are active members of US Equestrian and their Recognized National Affiliate organization. The goal of the award is to identify potential future leaders in the equine industry and recognize youth members for their achievements both in and outside of the sport. Applicants should demonstrate an ongoing dedication to the promotion of equestrian sport, serve as a positive role model for their peers, participate at any level of equestrian competition, exhibit characteristics of positive sportsmanship, and be involved in their community. Applications can be sent directly to ASHBA, at youth@saddlebred.com. ASHBA will select one nominee to submit to US Equestrian for final selection of the overall award winner. The National Youth Sportsman’s Award winner will be recognized during the Pegasus Awards at the US Equestrian Annual Meeting. The overall winner will receive a commemorative trophy and a $1,000 grant to be paid to the educational program of their choice. The overall reserve winner will receive a $500 educational grant. Deadline is August 15th.
