ASHBA Board Spotlight Q & A with Larry Hartsock

You'll learn their history with the breed and how they want to make a positive difference for the American Saddlebred.

Name – Larry Hartsock

Location – Castlewood, Virginia 

How did you get started with the American Saddlebred? When I was growing up my neighbors had American Saddlebred horses, and when I was able to get involved in horses myself the breed was a natural fit for me. 

What is your involvement with the American Saddlebred currently? My current involvement in the industry is primarily breeding and raising foals to sell as prospects. I focus on my broodmares, but also have and stand stallions such as Dylann’s Desert Admiral and Noble Heritage Praetorian. 

Why are you passionate about serving on the ASHBA board? Saddlebreds have been good to me and I see this as an opportunity for me to do some good for the breed in return. 

What other industry boards &/or committees have you served before? I have previously served on the American Saddlebred Registry board. 

What is your vision for bettering the breed through serving on the ASHBA board? My vision for the ASHBA Board is that we work to increase members’ involvement with our breed and introduce our great horses to more people. Specifically, the futurity and prize programs are important to me. I believe the board’s effort to improve them is essential to getting more people interested in raising and having generational involvement in the American Saddlebred community.   

What committees/councils/initiatives at the ASHBA will be or are you serving on as board member? I I currently serve on ASHBA’s Registry Council and Nomination Committee. 

What are the top three challenges you believe the ASHBA Board should be working on? 

    Improve the quality and functionality of the American Saddlebreds we raise Increase involvement in all levels of competitions Improve the prize programs and diversify them to be appealing to more breeders and young horse owners.  

What is one thing most people don’t know about you that you’d like to share?  I am an absolute college basketball nut, and love going to University of Virginia basketball games.
