ASHBA Board Spotlight Q & A with Owen Weaver

Name: Owen Weaver

Location: Roanoke, VA

How did you get started with the American Saddlebred? My mother and stepfather got me into it when I was thirty years old. My stepfather was determined to get me out of the hunter ring and on to American Saddlebreds. Mission accomplished!!

What is your involvement with the American Saddlebred currently? I show horses with Autumn Hills Farm in Simpsonville, KY and I have picked up my Mother’s mantle and raise babies as well. While I don’t raise the numbers she did, I still manage to keep a new show horse for myself every year or so and still have horses for others to ride. I am also on the Board of the American Saddlebred Horse Breeders Association.

Why are you passionate about serving on the ASHBA board? I am passionate about having a strong representative body for our amazing breed. We have an outstanding Board who is dedicated to the protection, promulgation and all around success of this breed.

What other industry boards &/or committees have you served before? American Saddlebred Registry Board, Roanoke Horse Show Board, Big D Charity Horse Show Board, past President of the UPHA Associates

What is your vision for bettering the breed through serving on the ASHBA board? I would love everyone who truly loves this breed to come together no matter their differences to get behind this fabulous horse. My vision is that we put our differences and self-interests aside to find the very best common ground and platform for our horse. If we can do that, then individual self-interests will probably be served in the long run. If we bicker about minutiae and fail to work together, we lose ground for all of us, especially the horse.

What committees/councils/initiatives at the ASHBA will be or are you serving on as board member? Secretary of the Board, Chair of the Officers Nominating Committee, Co-Chair of the Charter Club Committee

What are the top three challenges you believe the ASHBA Board should be working on?

    Bringing new people into this breed. Retaining those new people and converting them to longtime if not lifelong Saddlebred enthusiast. Increasing our breeding numbers by fostering number two. No new people=no new clients =no new horse market=no new horses

What is one thing most people don’t know about you that you’d like to share? I am an adventure junkie. Love them!!
