From the Desk of Marty Schaffel: United We Stand

When I was a child, I was convinced my parents never argued or fought. They never spoke an ill word toward each other in front of us kids. They never undercut each other. They supported each other. They stood together as one.

Years later, I learned that I was wrong about their arguing. They did argue, but only after they walked into their bedroom, shut the door, then walked across to the bathroom and shut that door.

When they reappeared, they stood united. Whatever they argued about behind closed doors was left behind. They were arm in arm and united when they faced us.

So it is with your ASHA Board of Directors. When we are in the boardroom, we challenge each other. We argue. We state our opinions aggressively.  Then we find our way to compromise and reason, and we seek unanimity at the end. We encourage dissent and the free flowing ideas of all, but we come together in the end.

We all are volunteers who take our responsibility to our membership very seriously.  In the end, we stand together with our best efforts and ideas for all of our members.

Marty Schaffel, ASHA Interim President
