Dear American Saddlebred Community,

We hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday season and are welcoming a great New Year! 2020 was a year that challenged us, tested our systems, and brought a new level of collaboration and resilience to our community and associations. We are proud that our organizations have led efforts for the betterment of the membership, industry, and breeds. One of the many initiatives that stand out as a milestone accomplishment is the work of the Joint Merger Task Force.

The Joint Merger Task Force’s work, along with its recommendation to merge the Registry with ASHA, will be presented to ASHA members at a Virtual Town Hall scheduled on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. ET.  ASHA members will have an opportunity to vote on the merger by proxy or at the ASHA Annual Meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. ET. The resulting organization, American Saddlebred Horse and Breeders Association, Inc., will streamline our finances, operations, staff, and volunteers in the advancement of what always has been a single mission – the promotion and protection of our beloved breed.

“This merger development has been a multiyear process, but in the past year our leadership, staff, and the task force have made a tremendous effort to work together to create a merger agreement that will be successful and support a better future for the American Saddlebred,” said Sandra Currier, ASR President. “Also, I appreciate the time spent by our sister organizations answering many of our questions. I am grateful to the team that came together from both boards to form this task force. The incredible amount of time, research, and planning that was put in to finalizing the development of this merger was very impressive.”

One of the principal benefits of the merger is that fundraising through a single 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity will improve our collective efforts. The merger has the unanimous support of both organizations’ boards of directors, all active committee participants, and broad support among breeders. The merger also will protect funds currently on hand at the Registry to be dedicated solely for Registry purposes.

“Through collaboration and perseverance our organizations have made it through the difficulty brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Marty Schaffel, ASHA President. “This past year has proven that we are stronger together and this merger will help ensure that this continues post-pandemic. The future is bright for our breed and industry.”

We ask all of our community members to attend the Virtual Town Hall to learn more about the benefits of the merger. The meeting will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. ET. Panel members will include Katriona Adams (ASR Interim Registrar), Sandy Currier (ASR President), Ed Glasscock (ASR Attorney), Anna Marie Knipp (Co-Chair Joint Merger Task Force), David Mount (ASHA Executive Director), Marty Schaffel (ASHA President), Chris Schubert (Co-Chair Joint Merger Task Force), Rachel Seifert (Attorney and Joint Task Force Member), and Stephen Sherman (ASHA Attorney).

Attendance capacity will be limited for the Virtual Town Hall, but a recording of the meeting will be available to those that cannot attend.
