Staff Spotlight: Alexandra Harper

Alexandra Harper is the Special Programs Manager for the American Saddlebred Horse Association. She is one of the great new members of the team recently joining the ASHA in March of this year. Alexandra is responsible for special promotions, sponsorships, the growth of youth organizations and events, enhancements to Charter Clubs and identifying and developing new opportunities for members and the Saddlebred, along with special events. Before joining the ASHA, she was a great resource as a volunteer member of the 2019 ASHA Youth Conference planning committee.   When asked what Alexandra loves most about the job she shared, “I enjoy getting to work with the youth and creating new programs and opportunities for our members and the American Saddlebred.”

Alexandra’s love and dedication to the American Saddlebred breed are what brought her to the ASHA. “There is nothing like the American Saddlebred, their beauty, charisma, and willing attitude is what sets them apart. I could not imagine not being around or having these beautiful horses in my life,” she shares about her love for the “Horse American Made.”   Since she was surprised with a Saddlebred for her birthday at the age of ten, she fell in love with the breed and never looked back. Alexandra’s dedication to our community grew as she and her Saddlebreds worked their way up from academy and equitation to the three and five-gaited performance divisions of her #asbdreams. Her involvement with the breed has allowed her to learn and ride with some of the best. In her adult years, Alexandra has taken to being an AOT and competing with her horses across the country.  She currently has two five gaited horses, her beloved retiree Stylin’ and Abacus who she trains for the adult five-gaited pleasure division.  Alexandra has always been one to help #sharethesaddlebred and regularly volunteers to assist 4-H programs with educational presentations on the breed and Saddle Seat discipline.

In addition to the Saddlebred industry, Alexandra has a wealth of experience in the equine community at large. As the former Operations and Communications Coordinator at the University of Kentucky, she was heavily involved in the higher education opportunities in the equine industry. Alexandra worked extensively with education initiatives in the Thoroughbred, Sport Horse and other equine industries. She played a vital role in projects such as the 2010 International Symposium on Equine Reproduction with the UK Gluck Equine Research Center and has several published articles on various equine topics for audiences consisting of researchers, faculty, students and the general public. Matching her love for horses with her talent for events, she was also a part of the team at Global Creative Connections that planned and produced the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, KY.

Alexandra is a native of Charleston, WV, but moved to the bluegrass in 2006 to attend the University of Kentucky and pursue a career in the horse industry. Many will recognize her for her beautiful voice and her willingness to volunteer her time to horse shows singing the national anthem. Most may not know that Alexandra is a certified therapy team with her dog, Lilly, through the University of Kentucky Hospital’s Canine Counselors. In her spare time, when she is not spending time with her American Saddlebreds, she enjoys kayaking, traveling, singing and spending time with friends and family.
