Staff Spotlight: Brenda Newell

Brenda Newell is the Senior Program Administrator for the American Saddlebred Horse Association, assisting with memberships and our ASHA Awards Programs. She has been a dedicated member of the ASHA team for almost 20 years. Brenda started with the ASHA in 2001, entering show results. She has gone on to serve the Saddlebred community since leading ASHA Youth, Charter Clubs, Awards and Scholarship initiatives.

When asked what Brenda loves most about her role here at the ASHA, she shared, “Even though I have never owned an American Saddlebred, I was welcomed into the “community.” I loved planning and administering the events, activities and awards for the youth and conventions most of all. It is so exciting to hear from people on our field trips that we have taken with the youth about how well behaved and mannerly they are. I love how many of the families have become like family to me. Even though many of the kids are adults with successful careers and starting families of their own, I enjoy the connections I still have with them. One of our clubs years ago had the slogan “Horses Raise Great Kids,” and I am proud to be part of this.”

Brenda is a 1982 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University. Career opportunities in hospitability brought her to Lexington to work at the Hyatt Regency after graduation. After becoming a single parent, she used her superior sewing skills to take on part-time work making custom racing silks, blinkers and saddle towels at Albright & Barkley and Silks Unlimited. In the early 2000s, she was ready for new challenges, and a helpful neighbor who was working at the ASHA suggested she submit her resume, and the rest is history!    

A lifelong Kentuckian Brenda grew up in Bronston, which is a small community near Lake Cumberland. In her spare time, she loves quilting, cooking, decorating and gardening. Brenda is quite the quilting expert teaching classes at a local quilt shop and always having her work on exhibit at the Kentucky State Fair each year.  As a 15-year cancer survivor, she has a deep understanding of facing life’s struggles. You can find her volunteering at God’s Pantry at least once a month. When she is not indulging her crafty talents or helping the less fortunate, Brenda enjoys spending time with her family. She is the proud mother of a set of twins Charley and Nathaniel and has three beloved grandchildren, Isabella, Penelope and Analiese.
