What Matters? Allies Matter.

“There is only one thing worse than fighting with allies, and that is fighting without them” – Winston ChurchillWe don’t agree all of the time about all things.  That is not the nature of allies.  But we do agree on common goals.  That is the nature of allies.  To unite to achieve a common goal, even if we don’t always agree about the tactics. So, it is with the American Saddlebred Horse Association.  WE have spent much of the last year forming alliances with a number of formal and informal organizations.  Just this past week, we issued a Safe Sport Fast Facts information post that attempts to answer some of the most asked questions about the Safe Sport legislation and the Center for Safe Sport (which incidentally, and if you read the Fast Facts, are not the same thing).  It was issued by something called the Joint Leadership Council.  So, what exactly is the Joint Leadership Council.  In a word, it’s “allies”.  This past January, at the Convention in California, the leadership of the UPHA approached other organizations to set up an “alliance”—a place to introduce and vet ideas.  A place where there’s safety in numbers and a place to bounce ideas around.  So, this group of “allies” was born—the United Professional Horsemen’s Association; the American Saddlebred Horse Association; the American Morgan Horse Association, the American Hackney Horse Society; and the American Road Horse & Pony Association.  The Arabian Horse Association has been invited to the JLC and is waiting on their Board’s approval to proceed. Certainly, we don’t see all things the same but we do know that ideas are better when pressure-tested and that together we’re better.  It was in that spirit that all of these organizations contributed to and approved the Safe Sport Fast Facts information that was released recently and the updates to the US Equestrian Drugs & Medications Guidelines earlier this year—simultaneously; together.Similarly, there is a more formal alliance called USEF Affiliates Workshop that is now being overseen by former ASHA Executive Director and longtime American Saddlebred owner, exhibitor, and breeder, Terri Dolan. This important group represents all of the USEF breeds and disciplines —including Hunter/Jumpers, three Western disciplines, Dressage, Eventing and 12 other breed and discipline organizations. Not always in agreement; but allied together to make change and achieve objectives. All working together to help promote equestrian sport and betterment of the equine community. We have seen leadership from the Arabian Horse Association and United States Hunter Jumper Association supporting collaborating with us at several of our breed events this year. As noted in an earlier “What Matters”, we’ve worked together to get three more trotting breeds seats on the USEF’s National Breeds and Disciplines Council; we’ve worked together to get more trotting breeds representation on the Licensed Officials committee. There are lots of acronyms thrown around in this industry.  There are USEF and ASHA and JLC and AHHS and AMHA and so on and so on and so on.  But we are allies and we work together through thick and thin to try to meet our objectives.
