ASR Votes to Approve Additional Sport Horse Champion Designation and Point Programs for Dressage and Endurance
In the most recent American Saddlebred Registry board meeting the voted to pass to expansion of the Champion Sport Horse program to add additional discipline specific designations and point programs for Dressage and Endurance. The Champion Sport Horse Program that was developed by the ASHA Equine Welfare Advocacy Committee (EWAC) was presented and passed this past July, also will be now be adapted by the ASR to also recognize registered Half-Saddlebreds.
The additional designation passed by the ASR will add a discipline specific recognition to the American Saddlebreds and Half Saddlebreds that earn Champion status within those sport horse disciplines. Just as WC, WCC, WGC etc. are recorded after a horse’s name, EWAC proposes that the “type” of CH-SH be recorded after the horse’s name in parenthesis as follows:
- (EV) – Eventing
(EN) – Endurance
(DR) – Dressage (proposed for future)
(FEI) – For horses that win at the FEI level – e.g. CH-SH New York City Slicker (DR, FEI)
As other CH-SH designations arise and are approved, EWAC will proposed the appropriate abbreviations at the time.
In the July 2020 meeting when the Sport Horse Champion Program was passed by the ASR Board point programs for Eventing was also approved. We are proud to share the point programs for Dressage, Endurance, and horses that reach the FEI level have also been approved. The point programs will be as follows:

SADDLEBRED RECORD POINT SYSTEM: Dressage
1. To achieve CH-SH status, a horse must earn 15 points at competitions sanctioned by an approved governing body.
2. Points may be earned at all levels of recognized competition from Level 1 on up. Scores at Training Level will not count.
3. Competition is defined as a riding event in a single day, as sanctioned and described by an approved governing body.
3. Points are based on recorded scores from the approved governing body.
4. No more than three (3) points at each level count from Levels 1 and 2 towards the 15 points of the CH-SH.
5. No more than five (5) points at each level count from Levels 3 and 4 towards the 15 points of the CH-SH.
6. No fewer than three (3) points from FEI levels (Prix St. Georges and above) must be earned in order to achieve the CH-SH.
7. No more than three (3) points per competition unless otherwise stated.
8. Point values based on test type:
Training Level
No points awarded.
Level 1:
Horses may earn .5 points for scores of 68+ at Level 1. No more than three points may be earned at this Level, and no more than three points may be earned at a single show.
Level 2:
Horses may earn .5 points for scores of 65+ at Level 2. No more than three points may be earned at this Level, and no more than three points may be earned at a single show.
Level 3:
Horses may earn 1 point for scores of 65-69.99 at Level 3 and 2 points for scores of 70+. No more than five points may be earned at this Level, and no more than three points may be earned at a single show.
Level 4:
Horses may earn 1 point for scores of 65-69.99 at Level 4 and 2 points for scores of 70+. No more than five points may be earned at this Level, and no more than three points may be earned at a single show.
FEI Levels (Prix St. Georges and Above):
Horses may earn 2 points for scores of 60 and above. No more than three points may be earned at a single show. Horses must earn a minimum of three points at the FEI Levels in order to have a CH-SH for Dressage.
Horses who achieve a score of 60 or higher from three separate judges at these levels will receive an automatic CH-SH.
Regional Competitions:
Horses qualify for Regional Competitions. Once competing, while they can still earn points based off of scores, horses who win or place second at a Regional competition will receive 2 points. No more than 2 points may be earned at any single Regional competition.
National Competitions:
Horses qualify for National Competitions. Once competing, while they can still earn points based off of scores, horses who win or place second at a National competition will receive 3 points. No more than 3 points may be earned at any single National competition.

SADDLEBRED RECORD POINT SYSTEM: ENDURANCE
1. To achieve CH-SH status, a horse must earn 15 points at competitions sanctioned by an approved governing body.
2. Points may be earned at all levels of recognized competition from Limited Distance on up.
3. Competition is defined as a riding event in a single day, as sanctioned and described by an approved governing body.
- Less than 49.9 miles = LD
50 to 74.9 miles: 50
75 to 99.9 miles: 75
100 and above: 100
3. Points are based on recorded miles from the approved governing body.
4. No more than four (4) points count from Limited Distance rides count towards the 15 points of the CH-SH.
5. No more than three (3) points per competition unless otherwise stated.
6. Point values based on ride type (BC = Best Condition – this award is more coveted than the fastest across the line):
Limited Distance
(no more than four points total). Horses may earn points for both placement as well as BC. e.g. if the horse wins and also gets BC, that horse may have four points for the competition.
- First place: 2 points
BC: 2 points
50 Mile:
Horses may earn points for both placement as well as BC. e.g. if a horse is top five (2 points) and earns BC (3 points) that horse may have five points for the competition.
- First place: 3 points
BC: 3 points
Top five: 2 points (note that if a horse wins, they do not get both the points for top five and first place)
Completion: .25 points
75 Mile:
Horses may earn points for both placement as well as BC. e.g. if a horse is top 10 (2 points) and earns BC (3 points) that horse may have five points for the competition.
- First place: 3 points
BC: 3 points
First place and BC (twice): automatic CH-SH
Top 10: 2 points (note that if a horse wins, they do not get both the points for top ten and first place)
Completion: .5 points
100 Mile:
Horses may earn points for both placement as well as BC. e.g. if a horse is top 10 (2 points) and earns BC (3 points) that horse may have five points for the competition.
- First place: 3 points
BC: 3 points
First and BC: automatic CH-SH
Top 10: 2 points
Completion: 1 point
5 completions: automatic CH-SH

In the strategic plan for the ASHA, EWAC is charged with promoting versatility for the breed. These proposals from EWAC that were passed by the ASR Board are critical advancements in accomplishing this goal.
