Ed Sanford of Shelby County, Kentucky has been breeding one or two Saddlebreds per year since the 1990’s. Ed follows Jim Aikman’s advice from years ago to match mares with a stallion that would complement her traits. He encourages other breeders to take advantage of the knowledge of older breeders who have been doing it for a long time. Ed’s most famous foal is the exquisite WCC CH My Front Page Lady (BHF) “Page”. Other notable winners include RWC Wildbriar’s Poetry In Motion and RWC Wildbriar’s Thunder And Lightning. His most notable memories as a breeder center around Page’s many Louisville wins with Amy Dix Rock and her subsequent success as a broodmare, producing WCC Take It From The Top, WC Off the Record, and RWC Turning The Page. In 2024, Amy established the Ed Sanford Breeder’s Trophy which is awarded to the breeder of the Ladies Three Gaited Championship winner on Saturday night at the World’s Championship Horse Show. Amy believes we should always recognize our horses’ breeders, and Ed (a true gem, according to Amy) is grateful to the Dix family for including him in Page’s advertisements and celebrating his role with this special trophy. Ed is a prime example of how a small breeder can make a huge and lasting impact.
