Fred Sarver Receives Wing Commander Medal

February 23, 2026: Lexington, KY – The American Saddlebred Horse & Breeders Association (ASHBA) proudly recognized Fred Sarver as a recipient of the 2025 Wing Commander Medal, presented by Smith Lilly at the Major Awards Ceremony during the 2026 ASHBA Annual Convention.
The Wing Commander Medal recognizes individuals whose lifelong dedication and leadership have strengthened the American Saddlebred breed and its institutions. Fred Sarver’s career reflects an enduring commitment to progressive breeding, responsible management, and organizational leadership.
A graduate of West Virginia University, Sarver began managing horse farms in 1982, leading operations at Leatherwood Farm in Virginia, Callaway Hills Stable in Missouri, and Jones Mountainview Saddlebreds in Virginia. In 2004, he relocated to Kentucky to establish Leatherwood Stud, and today he and his wife Karen operate Cornerstone. Over his career, he has managed more than 70 breeding stallions, contributing significantly to the development and advancement of the breed.
Sarver’s service extends well beyond breeding. He has served as President of both the American Saddlebred Horse Association and the American Saddlebred Registry, Vice President of the American Saddlebred Museum, and as a founding leader of the Kentucky Saddlebred Owners and Breeders Association. His honors include the C.J. Cronan Award, induction into the Breeders Hall of Fame, the Gordon Jenkins Award, and the American Horse Council’s Van Ness Award.
