The KASPHA Board Announces the 2020 Scholarship Award Recipients

The KASPHA Board is excited to announce that the following individuals have been awarded scholarships for the 2021 academic year.

The KASPHA MERIT SCHOLARSHIP is a $500 Scholarship award given to the applicant, who competes at the performance level and is looking to pursue further education.

We are pleased to announce that the 2020 recipient is David Micheal Winstead of Taylorsville, Kentucky, who has been accepted to Illinois Central College. As a third-generation horseman, Future Farmers of America (FFA) and KASPHA member, David demonstrates a strong potential to benefit the future of the equine industry – a key purpose of this scholarship.

SUE PERKINS ACADEMY SCHOLARSHIP is a $500 Scholarship award given to the applicant, who solely participates in competitions at the academy level and is looking to pursue further education.

We are pleased to announce that the 2020 recipient is Rachel Johnson of Mount. Washington, Kentucky, who is currently in her final year of high school at Bullit East. Rachel is preparing to graduate high school with an outstanding academic record[AR1] . She has maintained a job assisting at the Louisville Equestrian Center, assisting in the day-to-day aspects of the lesson program.  and competing at the academy level. Rachel hopes to attend college with a focus in pre-law and eventually move on to obtain her law degree. Rachel has also volunteered with Dare to Care, in Mount Washington since 2016.

KASPHA SPIRIT OF THE SPORT is a $1,000 Scholarship award given to the applicant looking to pursue further education who best demonstrates the positive impact that the American Saddlebred has played in their life.

We are honored to announce that second generation horseman, Tyler Allen Walker of Georgetown, Kentucky) is the recipient for the 2021 academic year. Having submitted an outstanding application showing his dedication to the sport and furtherance of the Saddlebred industry in Kentucky. Tyler has been an active volunteer for the non-profit organization, Lash’s Lessons since its inception in 2008, and his duties there have been varied over the years. Most notably, he volunteered to represent Lash’s Lessons during the 16-day World Equestrian Games event at the Kentucky Horse Park, where thousands of people were exposed to the equine community and Saddlebred industry. He has continued to assist in educating and exposing the public to the equine community at parades, horse shows, and public-school events over the course of the last decade. The board is proud to know that they are able to further his educational pursuit.

BONNIE ZUBROD DEDICATION TO THE BREED SCHOLARSHIP is a $500 Scholarship award given to the applicant looking to pursue further education and a commitment to the furtherance of the industry.

Tyler Allen Walker of Georgetown, Kentucky, is the recipient of the inaugural Bonnie Zubrod scholarship. Tyler has demonstrated a true love for the breed and the sport and has held volunteer positions that benefit the breed and the sport. With all of his qualifications, we know that the spirit and purpose of the award are fulfilled in this stellar young man. 

We had many qualified applicants this year and the board had a difficult time in choosing the recipients. We would like to take a moment to congratulate all of the individuals that submitted applications and encourage those individuals that were not recipients this year to reapply next year.

The KASPHA board looks forward to seeing all of the great things the 2020 recipients achieve in the future. We encourage all young people to become active members of the KASPHA society. There are many opportunities for eager individuals, both within the internal committees and for career or academic advancement.  The board will be awarding these and many more scholarship opportunities for the 2022 academic year…you could be one of next year’s recipients!!!
