Nelson Green Receives Wing Commander Medal

February 23, 2026: Lexington, KY – The American Saddlebred Horse & Breeders Association (ASHBA) proudly recognized Nelson Green as a recipient of the 2025 Wing Commander Medal, presented by Smith Lilly at the Major Awards Ceremony during the 2026 ASHBA Annual Convention.
The Wing Commander Medal honors individuals whose lifetime contributions have profoundly shaped the American Saddlebred industry through leadership, excellence, and sustained impact. Nelson Green’s career stands as a defining example of that legacy.
A native of South Carolina, Green began his journey in the sport on his grandfather’s farm before launching his professional career at Cleveland Park Stables. In 1969, he moved to Richmond, Illinois, to serve as assistant to Tom Moore at Knolland Farm, beginning a trajectory that would lead to decades of championship success. He later managed Happy Valley Farm in Georgia and, in 1989, established his own respected training operation in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
Over the course of his extraordinary career, Green has trained more than 125 World’s Champions, captured the Fine Harness World’s Grand Championship five consecutive years, and guided amateurs to more than 50 World’s Championship titles. His service includes leadership roles on the USEF Saddlebred Committee, the ASHA Board, and as a founding member of the UPHA, in addition to judging nationally and internationally.
“Nelson’s impact on this industry is measured not only in championships, but in leadership and mentorship,” said Smith Lilly, Immediate Past President of ASHBA. “His dedication, discipline, and love for the sport have shaped generations of horsemen and horsewomen.”
Through five decades of excellence, Nelson Green exemplifies the standard of achievement and stewardship honored by the Wing Commander Medal.
