The Saddlebred World Loses Mrs. Betty Neil and Mr. Paul Briney
The American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) is saddened to share the passing of two remarkable individuals within our community, Mrs. David (Betty) Neil and Mr. Paul Briney. ASHA wishes to share on behalf of the Neil and Briney families the details of the arrangements being made to honor these devoted American Saddlebred enthusiasts and ASHA members.Saddlebred World Loses Betty NeilSad news came from Cleveland, Tennessee Thursday morning with the passing of Blythewood Farm matriarch Betty Neil. Mrs. Neil made a tremendous contribution to the American Saddlebred community through her Blythewood Farm. Purchased for her as a little girl by her father, the late Blythe Mayfield, Blythewood Farm has been an integral part of the American Saddlebred industry since 1942 when Betty and David Neil were married before he went off to war. When he returned from war, Mr. Mayfield had passed away, and David and Betty set up residence on the family farm, breeding, developing and showing world class American Saddlebreds for decades. After David’s untimely death in 1965, Bess kept their dream alive and took over the management of Blythewood Farms. Bess continued their dream for over 50 years and with her daughter, Anne Neil, produced many World Champion horses. Blythewood has won over numerous World Champion and Reserve World Champion classes over the years. Betty would have celebrated her 100th birthday this coming December 21.She is survived by her daughters, Margot Neil Everhart and Anne Mayfield Neil; her grandson John Blythe Everhart and wife Lou Everhart; granddaughter Mary Key Everhart Waller and husband Jordia Waller; great-grandchildren Mary Pearson Waller, Treutlen Elizabeth Waller and Harrison Blythe Everhart.The Neil Family will be celebrating her life with a gathering Tuesday, November 20th, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at the Museum at 5 Points (200 Inman Street, East Cleveland, TN 37311). Saddlebred World Loses Betty Paul BrineyPaul Briney passed away Thursday, November 15, 2018, due to complications from several strokes this year. Briney’s contributions to the American Saddlebred industry are numerous, including his many years as president and manager of the Midwest Charity Horse Show as well as many years served as president of the Illinois Horsemen’s Council.He and Sally Jo (nee´ Lockwood) Briney were married for 54 years and together created Pratense´ Farm in Chatham, Illinois where they bred, trained and showed American Saddlebreds. The family remains immersed in the Saddlebred industry to this day both in and out of the show ring.Paul is survived by Sally Jo, daughter and Pratense Farm trainer Paula, son Rob, daughter-in-law Betsy and grandchildren Lauren and Gage. Visitation will be held Saturday, November 24th from 10:30am-1pm with service to follow at 1 pm at Bisch Funeral Home in Springfield, Illinois.- From Saddle Horse Report
