Texas Charter Club Celebrates 2019-2020 Hall of Fame Inductees

The Texas Charter Clubs are so pleased to announce the 2019-2020 Texas Saddle Horse Hall of Fame Inductees will be Janie Hamilton and Charlie Smith. Please join us in welcoming two very deserving candidates to our star-studded Texas Hall of Fame!

Janie Love Hamilton

Janie Love Hamilton got her start with saddlebreds almost by chance in Tennessee when she was a young woman.  Finding her groove and success with five-gaited and walk-trot horses in the early days, she married Tim Hamilton in 1980 and moved to Dallas for Tim’s job in 1981.  She spent 10 years riding with Sam Riley and then Milligan Stables, during which she enjoyed many winning rides on Western Pleasure and Roadhorses as well, before opening her own training barn, Dark Horse Ventures, in 1991.  At Dark Horse, she expanded into Morgans and National Show Horses with great success!

The highlights of her time in Texas include founding the North Texas American Saddlebred Association (NTASHA), and serving as the Texas Futurity Secretary beginning in 1993, during which time she expanded the program exponentially until handing it over to Sandra Currier in 2007. Janie also founded the Texas High Point Awards program and the ASHA Texas Pleasure Horse Awards program. She has served as the regional editor for Saddle & Bridle magazine whilst covering the shows of the former Southwest Circuit, all while running her own successful riding program and then later working for Winsdown Saddlebred Farms.  In 2008, she left Texas for Tennessee and family obligations, but a piece of her heart remained in the Lonestar state.  She currently maintains the points systems for all the local awards, and recently helped design the new Southwest Circuit Awards program.  As a professional show secretary and manager, Janie has returned to Texas more than sixty times to see her friends and provide her expertise to the show office. Janie Hamilton is a Texas Saddlebred staple, and we are so proud to have her in the Texas Saddle Horse Hall of Fame! 

Charles D. Smith

Charles D. Smith was a rare and beloved horseman who was a UPHA and KSF WCHS Hall of Fame Inductee as well.  Beginning his storied career successfully in Florida, he came to Texas in 1966 and opened Tri-Oaks Stables. Primarily training horses for the Lyons family, he put together their daughter Dana with WC Our Anne Marie.  Also, while in Houston, he campaigned Last Revenge, Flaming Decision, James L., Miss Lori, and Dianna’s Decision.  Heading to Kentucky in 1972, he had left a legacy of success that has trickled through the decades of Texas Saddlebreds.  He was instrumental in the show ring success of Pat and Cathy Clark, John Wrather, Kaye Bowles-Durnell, Susan Swope, Heather Stumler, Celeste Burns, Carolyn Garrett, Camille Whitfield, Georgia Herpin Baker, Kim Skipton and others.  Many of whom have Texas connections and legacies of their own now!
