What Matters? Breeding Horses Matters.
“Nothing beats Mother Nature” Dr. Alan Raun
As we wrap up the Sweepstakes classes this weekend with the ASR Two-Year-Old Sweepstakes classes at the ASHAV Horse Show and the ASR Four-Year-Old Hunter Sweepstakes class at the St. Louis National Charity Horse Show, let’s celebrate all of the future stars of our industry and the breeders that made it happen. Let’s also celebrate all of the programs in place to help support and promote the breeding of American Saddlebreds.
One such program, the Stallion Sweeps, is now going into its fifth year of existence and has raised over $150,000 to help promote and support the breeding of American Saddlebreds. The program is a partnership between ASHA and the United Breeders Council and offers individuals a chance to win a breeding to one of the top American Saddlebred stallions in the country for just $25. Stallion Sweeps Tickets went on sale this week. The drawing will be held on January 23, 2021. “We are grateful to the 15 stallion owners that generously donated their services to the program and to everyone that purchased 6,000 plus tickets the past four years,” said David Mount, ASHA Executive Director.
Other programs, such as the ASR National Three-Year-Old Futurity, ASR Sweepstakes and ASR Futurity of Kentucky have given out over $7,000,000 in prize money over the past 20 years. Those classes along with the other young horse classes at the World’s Championship Horse Show this year were filled with exciting young horses, including several from first time owners and breeders. More information about those programs can be found in the Win Big Brochure. And speaking of first time breeders, the ASR 2020 First Time Breeder Program is designed to stimulate increased interest in breeding by reaching out to prospective new breeders. The program is for mare owners or lessees, who will be first time breeders during the 2020 breeding season.
Dr. Alan Raun, the late Hall of Fame Breeder said in a 2018 Interview, “Our industry is changing and not every horse can be a five-gaited star and not every rider could ride one.” This is true, so we are creating new opportunities to help support the breeding of American Saddlebreds in all disciplines. Let’s celebrate and support all of the young horses, the breeders that took that chance to breed them and the programs designed to support them, because Breeding Horses Matters.
